In fact, as explained in Steve Markman and Bill Holder's book, A History of Flight Simulators, Testbeds and Prototypes, the F-15 was stripped of its missiles, radar, and cannon. The tail fin, generator, utility hydraulic system, flap and speed brake motors gained another 40 pounds without repainting the aircraft.

The aircraft was also fitted with a tail fin replacement jammer and a nose pod with alpha and beta probes to determine angle of attack and angle with special battery packs and controls. Other special equipment includes an over-the-shoulder camera, g-meter, standby gyro, altitude checking equipment and ballast.

With these changes, the Streak Eagle saved 2,800 pounds, with each record attempt varying between 3,000 and 6,000 pounds of fuel.
