Parris Island is a suburb of Port Royal, South Carolina, and an island within the same island. It became part of the city on October 11, 2002, with the installation of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau previously designated Parris Island as a Census Designated Place (CDP), but not as a legal entity. Beaufort County. The population in 2000 was 4841 people. As defined by the US Census Bureau, Parris Island is part of the Beaufort Urban Cluster and the greater Hilton Head-Beaufort Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Parris Island was first settled by Europe in 1562, when the French team led by Jean Ribault occupied the island for a while. The first European agricultural settlement in what is now the United States. Four years later, the Spanish Pedro Mendes de Aviles founded the city of Santa Ela. The center of La Florida from 1566 to 1587, when Spanish explorers sailed from Santa Ella to explore the Tennessee Valley and Chesapeake Bay. Parris Island was captured by the Union Army in 1861 during the American Civil War. During the war, it became a coal filling station. After the war, through the efforts of African-American Congressman Robert Smalls, it continued as a warm-up station for the United States Navy and was renamed Port Royal Naval Station. The entire island was purchased in 1883. In the early 1890s, a dry dock was built in the sea area. The dry dock was completed in 1895.

In 1915, Parris Island became the site of the ship's discovery. In the early years of the Marine Corps presce, it was called Paris Island.
