Earlier this year US SOCOM issued an RFI for a new PDW. In March, Nathaniel F. wrote an article about it.

Breaking News: Sig Mcx Rattler Aka Mcx K The Firearm Blog

Well, Sig Sauer comes up with something that seems to fit the bill. Mr MCX Rattler. I call it MCX-K. Like the MP5 vs MP5K, the MCX Rattler is a smaller version of the Sig MCX. However, it is not a short version of MCX or MCX Virtus.

Looking at the right side the MCX Virtus has a front fender and brass baffle similar to the regular MCX.

The Sig MCX Virtus Pistol is 9" long while the Rattler is only 5.5", making the OAL just 16" when folded.

Definitive Guide To The Sig Mcx

The original prototype has Keymod handguards but the new Rattler appears to have MLOK. Note the lack of internal support. The brass baffle has also been slightly modified.

This is a group of five .300 blk super sonic slugs at 300 yards from a 5.5 inch MCX Rattler. I've never seen this before on the black line. This was filmed and recorded at Sig Academy.

I hope they release the Rattler as a pistol. Not sure why anyone would want a Virtus pistol on this thing though.

Conversion: In the above RFI, it is stated that US SOCOM is looking for conversion kits to convert the existing M4A1. Sig has an AR lower receiver adapter that allows the MCX magazine to be used with the MCX upper receiver on the AR-15.

Edit: Sig Sauer has the Rattler on their website. It will be available as a pistol and SBR with an MSRP of $2700. Currently, it is only offered in .300blk. Not sure if version 5.56 will be available later. As soon as we find out, we'll let you know. I want an ugly rattle gun. Depending on how you have the bag. Both are incredibly expensive, so... I won't have time anytime soon.

I have both. Rattler's 300BLK No problem. I can switch between "lightweight" and set the short format to SD Length SD and different factory settings. Together with the Sandman S it's about the same size as my 11.5" MCX. The Rattler is the smallest PDW I can think of and has been my "grail" for over 20 years looking for a reliable short radius. Until you start looking at where you can put a small pistol/SBR it's hard to figure out what that is. small. Fits in many smaller pockets than the 11.5" 5.56 MCX.

I keep it short and simple (no IR, just White Light and T2) as my "around town" gun without a pan full of Supers. The explosions and shockwaves (no candy and supers) are too extreme in my opinion. I find the 10.5" ARs just as, if not more explosive without cancer.

The only reason to go to the 11.5" Virtus is if you need a 5.56x45 platform. I personally don't mind the performance hit when you go below 10.5" in 5.56.

I have both. The Rattler fits in my Ukulele bag with my suppressor. You can also use the full holster and suppressor for 11.5" 5.56. File attached

Honestly, both guns will, ballistically, get the job done. Also the 5.56-inch 10.5-inch barrel. On paper, yes, it's not as scary as the 20cm M16, but in reality it has done a great job over the years and for defense it is more than enough. Bashing 10.5 is really the only virgin e-commando ad online right now.

Looking at Mall Ninja, 300 blk is the best route because with subs it's really, really, really quiet. People are so into ballistics when in reality, to defend themselves, bullets do more damage… do more damage. There is no "good" when it comes to this. Choose based on the criteria you think you need.

Virtus Vs Rattler

If that sounds like your goal, then the 300 block is a good winner as the 5.56 block is tall. That said, we must once again refer to the ninja from the Mall. The suspended 11.5-inch gun, while loud, won't bother you, even indoors. Not sure what kind of nonsense "oops" people are thinking they're coming in when they say how amazing 300 blk subs are. Yes, the 5.56 suspension sucks and yes, it can cause hearing damage, but given the small chance that you'll be using it in self-defense, the benefits for long guns and many others can be large. Again, this depends on how you define your use case.

If actually being able to train with your favorite weapon for self-defense is a factor, then the 5.56 is the obvious choice.

If you're the end of the world type, the 300 blk is borderline useless and the availability of the 5.56 makes it a good choice.

If size is an issue for you and you want a pocket pistol then the 300 blk will win as the round does 'better' with a shorter barrel. IF you have a bag big enough for a 11.5cm gun, that's a problem.

If we talk about areas that include "urban defense", then night vision can be considered. Virtus 5.56 gives you a space rail to install IR devices without creating a mess.

Midwest Industries Sig Rattler 5.25 Inch Handguard Mi Sigr 5.25

Listen, this is a broad topic and we could go on all day. Define your needs and choose accordingly. The internet won't be able to tell you "what's good" for you, only what might be "good." Don't let the E-warriors disarm you. Both are good guns and both will accomplish the same mission, just differently.

It depends on the needs. In my case, 300blk. This is a great comparison due to the 6 inch height difference.

Second, if you've survived long enough to the point where you're scavenging for ammo and can only find 5.56s, you might as well find a 5.56 weapon.

Virtus Vs Rattler

Will you be blocked 99% of the time? 9" isn't bad, but I'd go with the 6.75" route as my intended LVAW. Some hiding if needed. Can be used without a container + Rattler sized short foot. But use Virtus weapons and barrels. Nothing about MCX is easy to find right now, but I'd rather go the 6.75" route for a small, medium, easy-to-block site.

Pros/cons Of 300 Blk Rattler Vs 9” Virtus Upper Receiver

Both have different styles. 11.5 can run NV and silent, Rattler is passive only, but I have a mini TOR that I can set to 12. If I had unlimited ammo, I'd take Rattler if not more than 200 yards and Barnes Tac-Tx everything, and some sort of subsonic for silent work, if necessary.

I like the smaller Rattler, but have found the Virtus 9" a good fit. I also have a 5.56 9".

I shoot 5.56 out of 300. But look for a 9" 300 that actually feeds with super and NO interrupts.

I've seen subwoofers that don't work at 5.5" unless they're turned off, and others seem to work fine. For a few more inches, reliability rules in 9".

Sig Sauer Mcx Rattler Canebrake 300 Aac Blackout 5.5in Coyote Cerakote Modern Sporting Pistol

While you can carry about 11.5" with the storage attached to the bag, the bag tends to run small and will end up looking bulky.

The Rattler is roughly the same size as the MP5K-PDW but has the ability to use a supersonic 300BLK and better control/trigger. As another poster said, it's funny what you can hide from a little Rattler
